’84 Takes the
Winning Shot

FOR PANTHER BASKETBALL

Nick Griffin ’84 and Steve Kochones ’84 created a special moment for their classmates during their 40-year reunion celebration on campus this past spring by re-releasing their senior year project “The Rad Stuff,” a documentary film made to celebrate the boys basketball team’s CIF championship run that year.

The spirited viewing of the film in Founders Hall included special guest Coach Brad Hall ’73, who led that ’84 team to victory (and who is still the head coach of the program, having recently celebrated his 700th win with the Panthers).

During the Q&A with Nick Griffin ’84 and Steve Kochones ’84, it was mentioned that Poly was raising funds to renovate the Scott and Gamble Gyms—refurbish the floors, install new backboards and wall pads, paint, and more—but that the fundraising effort was short $60,000 of the total $325,000 estimated project costs.

Inspired by their memories of that championship run, and eager to celebrate the positive impact Coach Hall has had on their class, the Class of ’84 set out to “take the winning shot” by closing out the goal. Mobilized and motivated, 23 classmates stepped forward with the cumulative support needed to make the gym refurbishment fundraising a buzzer beating success!

The refurbishment project has already begun with Scott Gym being completed this past summer and Gamble Gym scheduled to be completed in summer of 2025. Thank you, Coach Hall. And thank you Class of ’84 for helping future generations of Panthers!
